Flies can be a real nuisance for animals. There are plenty of chemical sprays, but natural fly sprays are safer for your animals, better for the environment, and just as effective.
Meet our newest addition, Poppy! Our sweet little calf was having some trouble with flies, which led me to find a natural fly spray to keep her comfortable. She’s already much happier, and we’re excited to share the recipe that helped her!

Why Use A Natural Fly Spray?
Making a natural fly spray for your animals is super easy and comes with so many benefits! With just a few simple ingredients like apple cider vinegar, mineral oil, liquid soap, essential oils, and water, you can whip up a batch in no time. Not only is it quick to make, but using natural fly spray means you’re keeping harmful chemicals away from your animals and the environment. It’s a safe, eco-friendly way to keep flies at bay while making sure your animals stay comfortable and happy. Plus, you’ll know exactly what’s in the spray, which is always a good feeling!
Benefits of Natural Ingredients
One of the best things about using a natural fly spray on your animals is that it’s completely safe if they lick themselves after you apply it! Unlike chemical sprays, which can be harmful if ingested, natural ingredients like apple cider vinegar and essential oils are gentle and non-toxic. So, if your animals decide to give themselves a little grooming after being sprayed, there’s no need to worry. You’re protecting them from flies without putting anything harmful into their system—just another reason natural fly spray is a great choice for happy, healthy animals!
- Apple cider vinegar: Flies don’t like the smell of vinegar, and it acts as a natural repellent.
- Essential oils: Lavender, eucalyptus, and peppermint oils not only smell great but also keep flies at a distance. I choose to use Natures Shield Essential Oil and it works great!
- Mineral or olive oil: These oils help the spray stick to your cow’s coat and provide some relief from dry skin.
- Liquid soap: I use unscented Castile Soap in my fly spray. The soap acts as an emulsifier for the other ingredients.

DIY Natural Fly Spray Recipe
Here’s a simple recipe you can try for your animals:
Ingredients:
1 cup of apple cider vinegar
1 cup of mineral oil
2 TBSP liquid soap
2 tsp Natures Shield Essential Oil or 20 drops of essential oils (lavender, eucalyptus, or peppermint)
Instructions:
Mix all ingredients in a mason jar to form a concentrate.
Add 1-part concentrate with 5-parts water in a spray bottle.
Shake well before each use.
Spray it on your animals, especially around their legs, belly, and back where flies like to hang out.
How Often to Apply Natural Fly Spray
Natural fly sprays are effective as a short-term deterrent and won’t last as long as chemical ones, so you’ll need to reapply them more frequently—about once a day should do the trick, or more often during peak fly season. Your animals will appreciate the extra attention!
